Why Start with Ledger?

In the rapidly evolving world of cryptocurrency, security is paramount. Ledger.com/Start is your gateway to true financial sovereignty. Unlike software wallets (hot wallets) that are constantly connected to the internet and vulnerable to hacks, Ledger hardware wallets (cold storage) keep your private keys offline, providing an impenetrable fortress for your digital assets.

Whether you have purchased the robust Ledger Nano X with Bluetooth capabilities, the reliable Ledger Nano S Plus, or the revolutionary Ledger Stax, the setup process is the most critical step in your security journey. A proper setup ensures that you, and only you, have access to your funds.

This guide walks you through the official initialization process, ensuring you follow the best practices recommended by security experts worldwide. By following these steps, you are not just setting up a device; you are establishing your own personal bank vault.

Complete Setup Guide

Follow these 6 steps carefully to initialize your device securely.

01

Unboxing & Verification

Before you begin, ensure your package is intact. A genuine Ledger device comes in a shrink-wrapped box (for older models) or a tamper-evident box. Inside, you should find the device, a USB cable, and blank recovery sheets.

Warning: If your recovery sheets already have words written on them, DO NOT use the device. Contact Ledger support immediately.
02

Install Ledger Live

Navigate to the official website via Ledger.com/Start to download the Ledger Live application. This software is the companion app that allows you to manage your device, install apps, and view your portfolio. It is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.

03

Connect & Initialize

Connect your Ledger device to your computer using the supplied USB cable. Follow the on-screen instructions on the device. You will be asked to choose between "Set up as new device" or "Restore from recovery phrase". Select Set up as new device.

04

Set Your PIN Code

Your device will prompt you to choose a PIN code. This can be 4 to 8 digits long. We strongly recommend using an 8-digit PIN for maximum security. This PIN is required to unlock your device physically and authorize transactions.

05

The Recovery Phrase (Crucial)

Your device will now display a sequence of 24 words. This is your Secret Recovery Phrase. Write these words down exactly as they appear on the provided recovery sheet.

After writing them down, the device will ask you to verify each word to ensure accuracy. This phrase is the only way to recover your funds if your device is lost, stolen, or broken.

NEVER store your recovery phrase on a computer, phone, or cloud storage. Keep it strictly offline on paper or a metal backup.
06

Install Apps & Accounts

Once initialized, open Ledger Live. The Manager tab allows you to install apps for different blockchains (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana). Installing an app on the device allows you to create accounts in Ledger Live and start receiving assets.

Security Best Practices

  • Always download Ledger Live from the official website (ledger.com). Beware of phishing sites.
  • Never share your 24-word recovery phrase with anyone, including Ledger support. Ledger will never ask for it.
  • Verify transactions on the device screen, not just on your computer screen. Malware can alter what you see on your monitor.
  • Keep your firmware updated. Ledger regularly releases updates to improve security and add new features.
